# Why test Bing Ads if you're already running Google Ads

> Why Bing isn't a “backup Google,” who's actually on its audience, why lower competition often means cheaper leads, and why simply copying a campaign from Google won't work.

Once Google Ads is already set up and bringing in leads, Bing usually doesn't even cross anyone's mind — “our audience isn't there.” That decision is almost always made without any data at all, just out of habit: Google is what people associate with search, and everything else feels secondary. In reality, Bing (together with the Microsoft and Yahoo network) is a separate pool of search traffic with a different audience and much lower competition among advertisers — one that most businesses simply leave to their competitors.

## Bing isn't a “backup Google”

Bing is the default search engine on Windows and the Edge browser, so its audience naturally skews toward more corporate and desktop users, older age groups, and people who rarely change their device's default settings. This isn't a worse version of Google's audience — it's a different one, part of which never overlaps with people actively searching on Google at all.

## Fewer competitors — lower cost per click

Because most businesses don't even try Bing, competition for ad placements there is significantly lower. For the same keywords that have already proven effective on Google Ads, the cost per click on Bing is often noticeably lower — meaning the same leads can cost less simply because fewer advertisers are fighting for the same attention. It's an almost-free extension of a strategy you've already validated, not an experiment from scratch.

## Why simply copying a campaign from Google won't work

The most common scenario when a business does try Bing: they copy the Google Ads campaign one-to-one — same keywords, same match types, same bids. After a few days with no results, they conclude “Bing doesn't work for us” and never come back. In reality, audience behavior, keyword logic, and bid dynamics on Bing are different — the campaign needs to be adapted, not mechanically ported over. That's exactly where most self-run attempts waste the channel's potential.

## What usually goes wrong

- Bing never gets tested at all, because “our audience isn't there” — with no data to back up that assumption.
- The campaign gets ported 1:1 from Google with zero adaptation to different search behavior.
- There's no separate conversion tracking for Bing — the channel looks “ineffective” simply because its results are invisible anywhere.
- A symbolic budget gets tested for a few days, and the conclusion “doesn't work” gets drawn before enough data exists for a fair read.

You can only fairly evaluate a channel when there's somewhere to bring together data from every traffic source at once — otherwise Bing, like any other channel, simply gets “lost” among the overall numbers. And if your Google Ads campaigns are already running and you know exactly which campaign type delivers which result, that's the ready-made foundation for porting into Bing: [types of Google Ads campaigns](https://septminor.online/en/blog/google-ads-campaign-types/).

If a Bing Ads campaign is already running, it is worth knowing about the new tooling too: [Microsoft added AI management to Bing Ads, and it changes where to start](https://septminor.online/en/blog/microsoft-ai-max/).

## Want to see if Bing would work for your business?

I'll properly adapt a strategy that's already proven on Google Ads for Bing — with separate conversion tracking, so you get an honest read on whether leads are cheaper here, instead of guessing off a symbolic few-day budget.
