Meta now decides where your ads show — and you're the one paying for it

Facebook and Instagram ads don't appear in just one place. There's the feed, Stories, short videos, Messenger, plus third-party apps and websites Meta works with. Some of those places bring customers. Others just burn money — like a banner inside a mobile game that someone tapped by accident while looking for the "close" button.

Until now, whoever ran your ads could simply switch those places off. Since late August 2026, Meta has been gradually taking that option away. Deciding where your ads show is now mostly up to Meta.

What changed, in short

Meta believes its algorithm knows better than a person where your ad will work. So you can no longer switch off a "bad" spot for an individual campaign. Two blunt tools remain: block a spot for every ad in the account at once, or lower the bid, which doesn't stop the ad from showing there, just makes it rarer. One spot, Messenger Stories, Meta removed entirely on August 27.

What this means for your money

Meta's algorithm hunts for the cheapest result. And what your account counts as a "result" matters a lot. If instead of a real inquiry it counts, say, a form being opened or a button click, the budget will happily flow wherever those "results" are plentiful and cheap. There just aren't any customers there.

On the surface, everything looks great: a nice cost per lead in the report, charts going up. Meanwhile the phone is quiet, and your sales manager can't figure out where the account's numbers come from.

There's also a smaller issue that hits your image. An ad built for the regular feed can look cropped and cheap in vertical Stories. While those spots were switched off, nobody cared. Now your brand shows up there too.

And all of this lands in the most expensive season of the year. Ads get pricier in November and December, so every dollar leaking to the wrong place costs more. We covered why in why ads get pricier in the fall.

Signs this is already happening to your ads

If even one of these sounds familiar, part of your budget is most likely already working for nothing.

Why "just changing the settings" won't fix it

There's no single button that puts things back the way they were. To keep ads bringing customers rather than pretty numbers, several things have to happen at once. Work out what each ad spot actually delivered over recent months. Make sure the account receives real inquiries, not clicks. Decide what to block for the whole account without hurting the campaigns that spot was actually helping. And prepare ads that look right in every format.

A mistake at any of these steps costs money. That's why it's worth doing with people who work with Meta ads every day, not by trial and error on your own budget. More on why "boosting a post" isn't advertising that pays off in a separate article.

Let's check whether your budget is leaking

We'll look at your Facebook and Instagram ads: where they really show, what a real inquiry costs, and what should be cut. You get a clear verdict in plain words, and we handle all the settings.
